The grandnephews and grandnieces of Juan José Barcia Goyanes (1901-2003) have created this Blog to make everybody known this wonderful person, his work and some of his good deeds during his great and long life.

Juan José Barcia Goyanes (Santiago de Compostela26 de diciembre de 1901 - ValenciaEspaña13 de julio de 2003) fue un médico anatomista, pionero de la Neurología, de la Psiquiatría y de la Neurocirugía en España, Decano y Rector en Valencia, escritor y humanista español.2 Graduado de la Universidad de Valencia,3 es miembro de la quinta generación de médicos, que se han seguido prolongando en el tiempo, la mayoría de ellos profesores de Universidad y dedicados al cultivo de las ciencias neurológicas.
En dos ocasiones acompaña a su padre, que era médico militar al norte de África, donde inicia su interés por la cultura árabe. Auténtico políglota, hablaba Español, Gallego, Valenciano, Portugués, Alemán, Francés, Inglés, Italiano, Sueco, Danés, Ruso, Griego moderno, Árabe y Polaco y conocia el Griego clásico, el Latín, Hebreo, Sánscrito y Persa. Habiendo publicado en la mayoría de estos idiomas.


Juan José Barcia Goyanes was born in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, on December 26th of 1901, and died in Valencia, Spain, on July 13th of 2003. He was a well-known physician and anatomist, pioneer in the fields of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Neurosurgery in Spain. He was appointed Dean of the School of Medicine and later President (Rector) of the University of Valencia. He was also a productive writer and a Spanish humanist. He graduated from the University of Santiago, and he is the fifth member of a large family of physicians that have been continued along the generations, most of them professors in medical schools and dedicated to the neurological sciences.

In two occasions, he accompanied his father, a military doctor, in the North of Africa, where he started having interest for the Arabic culture. He was an authentic polyglot. He was able to speak in Spanish, Galician, Valencian, Portuguese, German, French, English, Italian, Sweden, Danish, Russian, Modern Greek, Arabic and Polish and he knew the Classic Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Sanskrit and Persian. He published in most of these languages.

Barcia estudia el Bachillerato y la carrera de Medicina en Santiago de Compostela, España. Inicia la carrera de medicina en enero de 1918, cuando contaba 16 años, al lado de su abuelo Juan Barcia Caballero y desde el primer año fue alumno interno de Anatomía.1 Terminó la licenciatura en 1922, ya que había adelantado un año, con excelentes calificaciones recibiendo el «premio Rodríguez Abaytúa» de la Real Academia de Medicina al mejor expediente de su país.4
En 1925 leyó su tesis doctoral titulada Variedades atávicas y las detenciones en el desarrollo, estudiadas en el maxilar superior de los locos.

Barcia studied High School and Medicine in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. He started the Medical Doctor Degree in January 1918, when he was only 16 years old. He was a student of his grandfather Juan Barcia Caballero and since his freshman year he was a collaborator in the department of Anatomy. He graduated in 1922 because he was able to be one year ahead, with excellent qualifications. He received the «Rodríguez Abaytúa Award» from the Royal Academy of Medicine for the best high degree qualifications of the country.

In 1925 accomplished his PhD dissertation entitled: “Variedades atávicas y las detenciones en el desarrollo, estudiadas en el maxilar superior de los locos”.
